#Dance4OurLives is a weekend-long event held just before Memorial Day Weekend to welcome and celebrate a safe summer in Chicago, where gun violence is a continued threat to various communities. This year, #Dance4OurLives will take place on May 18-19.
Though Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer, Memorial Day weekend has also historically been one of Chicago's bloodiest weekends with more than 30 shootings last year alone.
Seeing the need for a way to combat the violence in Chicago while empowering and uplifting its residents, Garley 'GiGi Tonyé' Briggs, founder of GiGi Tonyé Arts & Fitness, created #Dance4OurLives as a way to welcome a safe summer in Chicago. Briggs credits dance as having a positive impact on her from a young age. "Dance saved my life," she says.
Now in its third year, #Dance4OurLives features dance rallies, master dance classes and workshops, as well as performances from local dancers. It provides insight into the various benefits of dance, as well as resources to utilize dance as a safe and fun creative outlet. In order to make #D4OL accessible, all functions and classes are offered for free or at a discounted rate.
This year, #Dance4OurLives will have master classes and performances by artists from Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre, Praize Productions, Inc., Everybody Dance Now! Chicago and Delta Phi Delta Dance Fraternity, Inc. It is sure to be a weekend jam-packed with fun and exploration through the arts. You don't want to miss out, so make sure you sign up today!
